Kia ea ai ngā werawera o Rahitūtakahina me ngā aurire o Tangaroa.
Gisborne Boys' High School had the privilege of hosting this year’s Super Eight Ngā Tākaro event. The event was officially welcomed with a pōwhiri to bring together all participating schools. The weather conditions were ideal, with sunny skies and perfect conditions from Kī O Rahi, setting the field for a successful event.
The team representing Palmerston North Boys' High School was primarily made up of junior players. Despite their youth, the team exhibited diverse skill sets and impressive fitness levels. All players demonstrated positive attitudes both toward the game and each other, fostering a supportive team environment.
While the team was recognised for being the fittest among all competitors, the strategic play of the other teams proved more advanced, placing Palmerston North Boys’ High School in 4th position overall in the Kī O Rahi.
The following day, the team participated in Waka Ama racing. For the majority of the team members, this was their first experience with this discipline. Waka Ama racing involved paddling in unison, requiring synchronisation and teamwork. Although it was a new challenge for many, the students enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the water sport and embraced the experience.
A significant aspect of the event was the opportunity for the team to forge relationships with players from other schools. The students took full advantage of this, forming strong bonds both within their own team and with other participants. This camaraderie greatly contributed to the team’s overall performance and spirit throughout the event.
We acknowledge Wiremu Kaa and his team at Gisborne Boys' High School for their outstanding organisation and hospitality throughout the event. Their efforts were instrumental in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all participants. Thank you also to Mr Goerke for assisting Mr Strickland and the players at the event.
The Super Eight event was a highly successful and rewarding experience for Gisborne Boys' High School. The students not only demonstrated athleticism and sportsmanship but also developed meaningful relationships that will contribute to their growth both in and outside of sports. The event highlighted the importance of teamwork, physical fitness, and positive interaction with others, marking it as a memorable occasion for all involved.
