Silver Medals for our Canoe Polo Teams

Congratulations to both our Junior A and Senior A Canoe Polo teams who were both Silver medalists at the recent New Zealand Secondary Schools Canoe Polo tournament.

Junior A Team

The Junior A side began their tournament strongly beating FAHS 5-1 and Karamu High School 3-2 on the first day of competition. Saturday's games also began well with a victory over Central Hawke's Bay College 8-6 and then Napier Boys' High School 3-1. This was followed by a 6-8 loss to St John's College that resulted in us relinquishing top position in the pool to them. The final pool game against Havelock North High School was good for our goal difference, as we won 10-0 and were able to regain our top-of-pool status.

The Junior A team played Karamu High School again in the semifinal on Sunday morning and put together a strong performance to come out on top 3 -1. This result saw them pitted against a very strong St John's College team in the final. St John's put in a dominant performance and came away with the win 2 - 5.

Overall this was an outstanding performance from the Junior A side and they can be very proud of earning Silver.

Senior A Team

The Senior A side began their campaign by drawing with Central Hawke's Bay College 3-3, beating Karamu High School 5-2 and Shirley Boys' High School 7-5.

Saturday saw them narrowly lose two successive games to Napier Boys' High School 4 - 5 and the Manawatū Regional Champions, Feilding High School 3 - 2. The final pool game against St John's College saw us lose composure after a good start, meaning that we needed to come from behind for a 4-3 win in a nerve-wracking final few seconds. This tenacity ensured that we secured third place in the pool round and a semifinal match-up against Napier Boys' High School the following day.

The Senior A side gave away a 2 - 0 lead in their semi-final against Napier BHS, with the scores locked up at two all at full time. We lost the charge start but regained possession to enter an intense back and forth. In the final moments, Alec Ross scored a long shot to win us the golden goal and secure a spot in the final against Feilding High School.

At half time in the final we were down 1 - 3 against a Feilding High School team that was playing very well. Despite a commendably spirited effort and determined defence, we were unable to make headway and had to settle for 4-1 loss.

As per the Junior A side, this was an excellent performance and the young men in the team can be very proud of their efforts throughout the tournament.

Medals were presented to the teams upon their return to school:

The Junior A Team was Ryan Burmeister, Jacob Dawber, Sam Hawinkels (captain), Josh Irwin, Leejun Kim, Conor McEwan and Charlie Pedley.

The Senior A Team was Aidan Dassler, Keagan Doherty, Tom Hawinkels (co-captain), Oscar Jacob, Liam McEwan (co-captain), Ben Pettersson and Alec Ross.

Congratulations to the Senior A co-captains Tom Hawinkels and Liam McEwan who were selected for the tournament team, a testament to their very high level of play throughout the competition.
