Reader's Cup 2022 by PNBHS

Success at Manawatū Readers’ Cup

Palmerston North Boys’ High fielded a bigger group of students in the Manawatū Readers’ Cup in 2022 than in any other year. The interest in reading among our year 9 students is extremely encouraging.

The contestants had to read six books over four months. These were:

  • The Calling by Fleur Beale
  • The Changeover by Margaret Mahy
  • Falling into Rarohenga by Steph Matuku
  • If Not Us by Mark Smith
  • The Inkberg Enigma by Jonathon King
  • Refugee by Alan Gratz

Our boys did themselves proud, jostling for a copy of each book at the library, and meeting regularly to test one another in preparation for a gruelling contest against teams from schools distributed throughout the Manawatu.

The quiz took place at the Feilding Civic Centre. The event organisers must be complimented on delivering an enjoyable evening. Spot prizes for the audience and participants added and extra buzz to the evening.

After six rounds of tricky content questions about each novel, Palmerston North Boys’ High secured second and third place.

We hope to engage even more students in this competition next year.

The scond placed team (photograph at the top of this article) was: Leo White, Callum Thompson, Ronald Sun and Sakthi Prabhu.
