Community Service

Encouraging young men to involve themselves in activities that provide service to others - whether that be to our school community or wider community - is a key component of our Character Education and Barrowclough programmes.  There is a growing body of evidence highlighting the benefits of service activities, and not just to those who are the recipients from those activities.  Providing service is a great way to develop our sense of belonging with our community as well as an understanding that we are all capable of helping out others.

Young men have recently been selling raffle tickets on behalf of the Plunket Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who supported this, $2,820 was raised.

Fred Hollows Day 2021 - Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser — Image by: PNBHS

Our annual Fred Hollows Day supports the work begun by one of our Old Boys, the late Fred Hollows.  Through a series of fundraising sausage sizzles and a collection, $785.60 was raised.  The New Zealand branch of the Fred Hollows Foundation works extensively throughout the Pacific Islands restoring sight and preventing cataract blindness and this money will contribute to life-changing interventions.

Hundreds of non-perishable food items were donated to the Palmerston north Food Bank through our annual collection.  Annually, the demand in our local community for support from the foodbank increases and the young men and whānau who donated have directly contributed towards supporting those in need in our local community, including some in our direct school community.

PNBHS Blood Donor Day 2021 — Image by: PNBHS

Our annual Blood Donor Day is an opportunity for young men and staff to make a life-saving donation.  It took less than 24 hours for all of the available donation slots to be allocated and the New Zealand Blood Service has advised that they will increase their capacity when they visit us in 2022.

RSA Poppy Appeal 2021 — Image by: PNBHS

In April young men were out and about in Palmerston north supporting the annual RSA Poppy Day appeal, with the donations received supporting current and former members of New Zealand's Armed Forces.

These are only a few of the many service activities that our young men have been involved with.  Many others have given their time to mentor and tutor their peers and to coach and manage sports teams.  Thank you to all of them for their contributions to Palmy Boys' and our community throughout 2021.
