Rector's Company

1. SGCNZ Sheilah Winn Regional Festival

The Rector’s Company is delighted to have been selected as the Manawatu/Whanganui entry for the National Otago University SGCNZ Sheilah Winn Festival. Eli Hancock, Jacob Waugh, Matthew Wongchoti and Jonathan Stone performed a scene from The Winter’s Tale. Feedback for the boys from the assessors was detailed and very positive, giving us areas for improvement that we are addressing. In particular the assessors noted:

“Everyone in this scene – regardless of line count – did their jobs well. This was a very good scene. It was dynamic, clear, and well told. We look forward to seeing your progression.”

The national festival takes place over Queen’s Birthday weekend in Wellington and is an opportunity for the boys to attend workshops on some areas of performance, visit Toi Whakaari (New Zealand Drama School), and attend performances from the Young Shakespeare Company. Performances are open to the public and tickets can be obtained through www.ticketmaster.co.nz.

Success at the festival carries with it the possibility of selection for the National Schools Shakespeare Production in Dunedin during the October holidays. From there a smaller group are selected to form the 2022 Young Shakespeare Company that travels to the Globe Theatre in London in 2023, and participates in two weeks of development and performance on the stage of the Globe. The boys involved are very excited about the prospects and we will report further in the next Newsletter.

2. Much Ado About Nothing

Following staff illnesses and delays last term, it was felt prudent to postpone the production of Much Ado until 2023, when we are hopeful that life is much less dominated by globally oppressive diseases.

3. Shakespeare Show Case

Instead of Much Ado About Nothing we will have a Showcase of scenes from Shakespeare

“Shakespeare: Comedy and Tragedy in the Round” which will run from June 28th to June 30th in the PNBHS Little Theatre from 7.00pm.

Excerpts from Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will be performed.
