Mike Sung Selected For NZSO National Youth Orchestra
Congratulations to Year 12 student Mike Sung who has been selected for the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. After completing an online audition in March, Mike has been selected to play Clarinet, an exceptional achievement as the Youth Orchestra is open to musicians under 25 years of age. The orchestra will rehearse in Wellington in late June before performing in concert at the Michael Fowler Centre on June 30 and at the Auckland Town Hall on July 1.
From the NZSO National Youth Orchestra website:
“Tomorrow’s performers today
We are committed to developing New Zealand’s young orchestral musicians through the NZSO National Youth Orchestra.
Formed in 1959, the National Youth Orchestra has played a vital role in providing unique opportunities for the country’s most gifted young orchestral performers. Performers have the opportunity to learn from and perform with leading conductors, artists and musicians of the NZSO. Many have gone on to forge successful careers as orchestral players, soloists, chamber musicians and teachers.
Thousands of young musicians have played in the NYO over the past 63 years, with over 900 in the past decade alone.
Many professional musicians, including almost half of the NZSO, are alumni of the NYO.
Internationally-renowned NZSO Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor Gemma New was a member of the NYO, where she had one of her first experiences conducting.
2023 NYO
This year the NZSO are delighted that six-time GRAMMY Award-winning conductor Giancarlo Guerrero will conduct the 2023 Season. Repertoire will include Copland’s evocative Billy the Kid Suite and Elgar’s transcendent Enigma Variations, as well as a new work by 2023 NYO Composer-in-Residence, Nathaniel Otley.”
