Super Eight Golf 2023 by PNBHS

New Zealand Super Eight Schools Golf Tournament

Super Eight Golf was supposed to be played in Term One in Gisborne but had to be postponed due to the damage from Cyclone Gabrielle. To enable this event to run New Plymouth Boys’ High School offered to host the tournament instead. The tournament was held at Ngāmotu Golf Course with its iconic holes; overseeing the sea, Mount Taranaki and sometimes both at the same time. It set a true challenge to all players. The weather turned out to be as good as the venue with a sunny couple of days and limited wind.

We chose to have 20 students compete in this tournament to grow interest in golf and build confidence and experience for juniors and Year 11 players.

The A team finished a credible fourth place in a medal competition behind New Plymouth Boys’ High School 1st, Rotorua Boys’ High School 2nd and Hamilton Boys’ High School 3rd. Our Team B finished on the podium behind Hamilton Boys’ High School and Rotorua Boys’ High School playing in the stableford competition.

During the prizegiving Mr Moore, New Plymouth Boys’ High School Headmaster, mentioned that the thoughts of all our schools are going to the people that still suffer in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne. He also congratulated all players for their effort on this difficult course, one that hosted previous New Zealand Open tournaments. Overall the Super Eight tournament was a success, the first time all schools brought at least two teams to compete.

Any young men who want to be considered to compete in the Manawatū-Whanganui Secondary Schools Championship need to register their interest with Mr Retemeyer or Mr Ramiroz.
