Service

Providing service to others - in our school community or in our wider community - is a great way for young men to learn about the important role they can play in strengthening our society.

There are many opportunities to provide service and in the last few weeks young men have had the opportunity to donate non-perishable food items in support of the Palmerston North Foodbank, to cook or buy a sausage in support of the Fred Hollows Foundation and to sell raffle tickets to help raise essential funds for the New Zealand Plunket Foundation.

Each of these organisations helps at a different scale: the Palmerston North Foodbank provides essential assistance to families in our local community, including those whose sons attend PNBHS, the Fred Hollows Foundation restores sight around the world, but with a special emphasis on our Pacific neighbours, while Plunket assists very young children to get the best possible start in life throughout New Zealand.

Through volunteering a small amount of time, money or grocery items, young men can begin to realise that they are able to make a difference.  Those who donated food items can know that a struggling family somewhere in our community will benefit from that and perhaps children will be better prepared to learn at school because they have a full stomach; those who purchased a sausage will know that their purchase went towards life-changing treatment for someone in the Pacific; while those who sold or purchased Plunket Foundation raffle tickets have contributed towards supporting the next generation of New Zealanders to get the best start in life.  Through small acts, each of us is able to make a positive difference in our community and wider society.

Participation in and contribution to service activities helps each of us to develop a sense of belonging, empathy for others and allows us to show our kindness and consideration.  Well done to everyone who has contributed and supported.

One thing I know.  The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.
