Junior Musical Theatre - Bugsy Malone

The Junior Musical Theatre Company performed extracts from the popular musical, Bugsy Malone in week 3 of Term 4. This is a 1970’s gangster spoof which tells the story of the rise of Bugsy Malone and the battle for power between ‘Fat Sam’ and ‘Dandy Dan.’

The show was directed by Kirsten Clark, Mark Kilsby, Axis Simon, Ben Algie and Jake Maskill. The mahi put in by the boys in the cast, crew, lighting and sound brought all the pieces together. The boys learnt how to speak in a New York accent, sing and dance at the same time and use choreography using tin cans.

Bugsy Malone is a slapstick comedy, so the boys learnt how to throw stage punches, fall off chairs, trip over buckets and generally fool around. The highlight of the show was the last scene. This was a battle between the two rival gangs. To keep it in the natural ‘slapstick style’, the boys used silly string spray and shaving foam pies, which they threw and fired everywhere. It made a large mess and covered everyone, but it was a lot of fun!

Thank you to whanau, friends and PNBHS for supporting us with this year’s season!
