Sport New Zealand Youth Sport Hui
Earlier this term the Rector, Mr. Bovey, was part of a panel discussion at the Sport New Zealand Youth Sport Hui. Our high rates of co-curricular involvement – approximately 2,200 sports registrations and another 560 in cultural activities, drama and music – make us something of an outlier with falling participation rates the norm in many areas. The significant involvement of our staff in coaching, managing, directing, conducting and organising these opportunities, as well as an ethos that eschews the use of scholarships to ‘buy in’ players and emphasises developing the talent amongst the young men in our school, also set us at odds with many other institutions.
In the discussion Mr. Bovey shared our data showing the positive links between co-curricular involvement, attendance and achievement for our young men; those who are involved in co-curricular activities, on average, attend school more frequently and achieve higher academic results than those who are not involved.
It was great to see what we are doing acknowledged in this forum. A huge thank you to our young men, staff and all of the parents and other whānau who support us to provide an ‘all-round’ education for our young men.
