New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge
Last week Ishmam Biswas, Zi-Yang Fan and Zi Xian Wang took part in the North Island championships of the New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge. This day follows two rounds of competition on Education Perfect and is organised by The Centre for Brain Research, at Auckland University's School of Medical Sciences. As well as the exciting rounds of competitions on Kahoot, the day included Auckland Medical Research Foundation learning centre tours featuring the Anatomy Laboratory, hands on experiences at research laboratories and with microscopes. There were excellent break-out sessions with groups of scientists and university students at various stages of their careers where the many and varied careers in science were talked about and students could ask questions.
From Ishmam's efforts in the individual rounds of the competition, he secured an internship at the Centre for Brain Research, funded by the Neurological Foundation. He will spend a day with scientists from the Centre during the Term 3/4 school holidays and visit the Neurological Foundation Human Brain Bank.
This was a fun and interesting day and an excellent opportunity for Year 11 students to develop understanding of the brain and get a taste for careers in science biomedical research.
