Year 10 Camp to Mahia Bay

The group of 31 students met at school early on the Sunday morning eager to get away for a week to Mahia. Upon arrival at Kaiuku marae, we were welcomed onto the marae. After unpacking and setting ourselves up we were into our camp activities. The first night one of our students was feeling unwell and we thought it was just the travel or eating too much of one thing (little did we know).

Monday morning, we were up at sunrise for a run. After breakfast we packed up for the morning and headed to Mahanga Beach for a boogie board and swim. The waves were a good height and many waves were caught. Back at the marae for lunch and we felt we had already done a lot by mid-day. The afternoon was spent doing some survivor group challenges and then we took the boys down for a snorkel and fish. That evening more group challenges were done. After an early start, the boys were asleep quite quickly.

Tuesday started with another run at 5am and a similar program to Monday as the sea conditions were good. A swim and boogie board and more diving and Tuesday night Mr Gibb’s camp quiz. As we were heading to bed another student came out to say he felt unwell and as the night progressed more and more students were running outside with illness. By 4am we had nine unwell and the call was made to head home. It was indeed unfortunate to end camp early and so we returned home on Wednesday due to a spreading gastro bug. Not the end to camp we were wanting.
