PNBHS Lawn Bowls Championship

The annual PNBHS Lawn Bowls Championship was played on Friday 21st October at the Takaro Sports Club on Featherston Street. The competition was particularly well supported this year with 30 boys, in total, taking part. The last couple of years have seen a dramatic increase in interest in the sport from students at our school, leading to much higher numbers competing than in the past.

The weather didn’t help us much, as it was quite windy and cold but the rain held off, which meant that play was uninterrupted throughout the day.

All boys got to play at least two games of bowls. If they lost their first round game in the main competition, they went into the consolation (plate) competition. There were opportunities in the afternoon for boys who had been knocked out of both competitions early to get some practice on the spare rinks, which became available on the green as both the main competition and the plate reached their latter stages.

There were some thrilling match-ups and some quality bowling throughout the day, culminating in an excellent final where Jackson Broughan (Year 10) edged out previous winner John Blackwell (Year 13) to take the title. Johnny Wilkshire (Year 12), last years’ winner of the main competition, won the plate final.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Takaro Sports Club for hosting us once again this year. Their hospitality and enthusiasm, both for the game in general and encouraging young people to take up the sport, is exemplary. Several of the members helped with coaching the boys and marking games, including Pat Horgan, who recently broke the record for wins in our region, with 28 centre titles and Sharon Sims who has represented and won medals for NZ at both Commonwealth Games and World Championship level.
