Coach – Alec ‘Grizz’ Astle -PNBHS Staff member 1974-1998. HOD Geography and Deputy Rector. Coach of the 1st Cricket X1 when they won the Inaugural Gillette cup in 1990. 1st X1 Coach 1988-98. Organised and Managed the Inaugural overseas cricket tour in 1984. Four further tours to Queensland, Fiji, Singapore and south Africa.

75 games for Manawatu, 208 wickets, best bowling 7/39 v Horowhenua, 623 runs. Won the Taranto Shield for Premier 1 bowling five times. Three first class game for Central Districts.

1998 – 2008 New Zealand Cricket’s Inaugural Development Manager in Christchurch. 2009-12 Manager, Community Sport for SPARC (now Sport NZ) in Wellington. On retirement completed a PhD at Massey University, ’Sport Development in Action’. In 2021 he co-authored (with Murray Brown) ‘125 Not Out’ a history of Manawatu Cricket.

Alec received from NZ Cricket the Sutcliffe Medal in 2014 and an Honorary Membership in 2022 for outstanding services to cricket in New Zealand and in 2019 a Lifetime Achievement Award for cricket from Sport Canterbury.
