Anaura Bay Year 10 Camp Transferred To Akitio

Due to Covid-19, the marae at Anaura Bay was unable to accommodate us this year, but we were lucky enough to find a suitable substitute at Akitio, albeit late in the piece.

We left on Monday morning looking forward to a new adventure for the staff and students involved. After a relatively short drive in comparison to what we were normally used to we arrived at the Aikitio Community Centre which was our base for the week. The accommodation was very well appointed and after unpacking we were ready to get into our activities.

A week based around the sea is a lot of fun. The students made the most of the opportunities with 28 mates to get involved. Even after a 5am start for a run, the students packed a lot of activities into their days. The staff ran a ‘survivor series’ of activities throughout the week, where teams competed in a competition similar to the Shand Shield at school. Activities included touch, tug a war, sand sculptures, skits and artistic creations to name a few. Thank you especially to Mr McDougal, Mr McGregor and Mr Strickland for leading these activities. The winning team at the end of the week was the Pink team led by Marino Rimene. Marino also received the ‘Stuie’ award for the student of the week. Students also enjoyed swimming in the river and sea, and fishing during the week.

Thank you to the staff involved: Mr D Durie, Mr J Strickland, Mr L Retemeyer, Mr P Gibbs, Mrs G Reid, Mr A McDougal, Mr T McGregor and Mrs J Durie.
