Manawatū-Horowhenua Secondary Schools’ Ngā Manu Kōrero Oratory Competition
The 2024 Manawatū-Horowhenua Secondary Schools’ Ngā Manu Kōrero Oratory Competition was held on Monday, 27 May at the Regent Theatre. Palmerston North Boys’ High School was represented with distinction by Year 10 student Jaden Durston in the Sir Turi Carroll Contest. This contest challenges participants to deliver a prepared speech in English, lasting up to six minutes. Jaden chose the topic ‘Stress less, live more—rangatahi tips,’ with ‘rangatahi’ meaning youth.
Jaden may not have secured a place in the competition, but his message left an indelible mark on the audience. He emphasised the importance of finding one’s passion and pursuing it with joy—be it socialising, sports, or gaming. He encouraged his peers to approach necessary tasks, such as schoolwork or chores, with a positive and proactive attitude. He highlighted the role of whānau in setting achievable goals and celebrating every success, fostering a sense of capability and self-worth.
In his conclusion, Jaden addressed the multifaceted pressures faced by teenagers, advocating for supportive home environments that assist youth through triumphs and trials alike. He reminded his audience that strength comes from unity: “Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini—My strength is not as an individual, but as a collective.”
To those who struggle in silence, Jaden’s message was clear: support is all around, from friends, family, and teachers. He urged them not to be ashamed to seek help, as others may be facing similar challenges.
Tau kē, Jaden; you have admirably completed this endeavour.
