Waterwise
Year 6 students are fortunate to be able to go to Howick Beach four times for the Waterwise Programme. They do beach activities, paddle the kayaks and learn to sail a dinghy with a focus on water confidence, water safety and water fun!
Here's what Manayah and Rio from Room thought. Enjoy watching Manayah's video.
On a hot, sunny day, Room 26 went to Howick Beach to participate in Waterwise, a programme instructing children in water safety.
Waterwise was a concept set up in 1980 and is still ongoing. There are many centres all over Auckland, that many schools visit to learn crucial skills on and in the water.
Everyone enjoyed sailing the optimists, kayaking and some fun beach activities. We switched between the activities and everyone had a chance at each activity. After two sessions, we stopped to have our only time to eat, because the instructors wanted us to have as much time experiencing Waterwise as possible.
Some people even had a chance to capsize the optimists and our kayaks!
In Point View School, Waterwise teaches many Year 6 students water safety, as well as helps them look after their belongings in preparation for school camp.
The instructors are supportive and encouraging- they are guaranteed to keep you safe!
