Writers Quiz Competition

Cindy Jih —

Please see below for a recount from our Room 23 students Enney Pak and Olivia Lum who participated in the Writers Quiz Competition:

The car lurched to a stop and we clambered out, eager to get inside the Baverstock School hall where the Writers Quiz was being held. We walked up the steep stairs on our way to the gates. I could feel my clammy hands shaking anxiously. Immediately I noticed Point View Team A. Daniel, Irene and Elly vigorously waving at us outside of the school.

Together both teams walked through a narrow pathway and a lady greeted us and led us into the hall. There were square tables lined up in neat rows. Instantly, I noticed pieces of paper placed on each table with the team's name. Peering over a table we saw our name and hurriedly seated ourselves.

The Hostess explained how the quiz was going to work. There were six rounds in total including a bonus round. Every round specialised in two books. Each sheet of paper had eight questions and two quotes.

The games had begun.

I listened intently for the first question. Silence as Team B stared at each other, ruling out possible answers. Elise snapped out of her daze and sprung into action, pen scribbling the answer down.

Time flew and before I knew it we were at the bottom of the page doing the quotes. The first quote was read. We immediately came up with the answer. We checked with each other making sure all of us agreed. We answered the second quote with confidence. Our hands shot up, waiting for the Runners to retrieve our paper. Then the host announced that she was going to do a draw. If your school was called, a representative went up and picked a book for their school library. The host came round with a tall red and white hat.

The lady was doing another draw, when Point View was called to get a book Elise was ecstatic. She jumped out of her chair walking towards the small table at the front. When Elise came back she was grinning broadly. We studied the book and read the blurb. Before we could finish looking, the graph was put up, we had only scored five points.

Over the next few rounds we had scored various points. I sighed in relief when the runner came to take our last paper. When everyone had finished I was relieved that it had finally ended. More book prizes were given out and the host told us to take a break before the results were announced.

Eventually we were told to take a seat as the winners were going to be revealed. The hall in anticipation.

“In third place is… Point View Team B with 49 points!” I gasped. Together our team walked up to the front of the room and lined up holding our certificates proudly.

“In second place is… Point View Team A with 50 points!”

They walked up with smiles on their faces but I could tell they were disappointed they didn’t win.

“In first place is… Cockle Bay Team B with 52 points!”

Even though we didn’t win first place it was a great result and such an unforgettable experience. We would like to thank Ms Groot and the other teachers that supported us through this journey.
