Survey Results

Denise Torrey —

Thank you to the 175 of you who have filled out the two surveys earlier this month.

Firstly, congratulations to Steve Dunsmore of Horsham Downs School in Hamilton and Ang Sheat from Lumdsen's School who won the draws. A prize is winging its way to you as we speak.

Survey 1:

Our membership is made up of 91% of U3-6 schools and this impacts on the priority list.

The results of our survey asking you to prioritise the claims are below. All claims are taken into the negotiations as well as ones that we believe are important to our profession as a whole eg Small school claims and those that might need updating eg clause to 4:4:1 giving great flexibility to those with a break of service.

Priority

1. Remuneration with its various components

2.    The retention and embedding of the PPCB Professional Coaching, Professional Learning and Wellbeing Support Fund

3.    Sabbaticals of right every 5 years.  Get 20-week sabbaticals into the collective

4.    Long Service leave- new claim. Document sent previously

5.     Sick Leave including -donating sick leave and or payouts

6.    Payment for teaching practising certificate

7.    Principal Insurance payments

8.   Increase in employer contributions to KiwiSaver / Super fund after a certain number of years of service as a principal

9. Cellphones

10. Optometrists payments for eye tests

Survey 2:

In the second survey we tried to find out how members used the fund and ascertain the impact the fund had on you. We also wanted to see if their was any appetite to trade some of the fund for something else on our list.

It was heartening to see the many and varied ways the fund was used.

In order of the broad categories

  • Overseas conferences

  • Coaching

  • PLG

  • NZPF conference

  • Other professional development- eg leadership, media ( there was a huge variety)

  • Releasing DP/ admin staff to support principals

  • Training other staff in their leadership roles

  • A variety of wellbeing activities- e.g gym, medicals, nutrition

The main areas in which the fund impacted on you were factors that contributed to job satisfaction ( see graph below)as well as on coping strategies and problem-solving strategies. These were areas highlighted in the The New Zealand Primary Principal Occupational Health, Safety

and Wellbeing Survey 2021 as areas of concern for principals so this is positive.

The results from the questions on trading off the fund against other claims are not decisive. If this was to come up in negotiations we would be coming back to you for a clear steer.

Once again thank you to those who participated. Our negotiations team are now working collecting evidence on and developing arguments for and against( eg what we think the MoE might come back at us with) each claim.

The claims will be drawn up by our lawyer later in the year ready for us to go when we need to.

We also received the Workforce Policy Statement from the Public Service Commission.

We are going through this carefully as it will impact on our negotiations.

If you had any thoughts on this document and the work arounds for our negotiations we would be pleased to hear from you.
