Safe Strong Water Babies by PSS

Funding in Focus

We’re going to start a new section keeping you informed on our latest funding projects. To kick things off, we were delighted to receive a grant from the Health Promotion Agency (HPA).

Haumaru Kaha Wai Tamariki – Safe Strong Water Babies is a project dedicated to seeing 90 children, aged under 3, being given formal swimming lessons so they can be safe and confident in the water.

This project has involved teaming up with Splash Palace and running three block courses with Family Works and Awarua Whanau Services. Nerida Hope-Johnstone has held a lead role in the project and says “Sadly drownings are a big issue in New Zealand so the sooner we can get children confident in the water the better.”

“I’ve been amazed by the positive response from parents and children. Every week their skills have been improving and it’s been absolutely brilliant to watch”, she said.
