Principals message

Chris Els —

Kia ora whānau

This has been a busy fortnight at school, with lots of meetings with a variety of groups. It’s time-consuming but also very exciting to know that we have a lot of things planned to ensure we provide the best for our tamariki.

Last week we had the Life Education caravan for our year 1-4’s from the conversations I had it seems it was well received and the students enjoyed the message and in particular Harold the giraffe.

We have a number of senior students who are doing waka ama on Thursdays. They are currently learning the kaupapa of Ngāti Toa, the meanings of our waiata, translations and how the Marae is the whole area. Talking with our students they are looking forward to getting onto the water. I too cannot wait to see our students on the water.

Our junior teachers are working hard to support all our junior students within structured literacy and they are all on the learning journey together. We have purchased a large number of decodable readers to support this learning.

Year 0-4 students had a beach day yesterday and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who spent the time down there. Thanks to all our parent helpers that made this possible.

We also had five staff attend a maths workshop at Kāpiti college to network and see how the college does things. This was the first of a few scheduled meetings and it seemed to be very productive. It really is good to see the College and primary schools connect and work together to support our learners.

I received a lovely letter from a passenger on the Bluebridge ferry who also travelled with our students. They couldn’t speak more highly of how awesome our kids, staff and parents were, travelling back from Teapot valley camp. It really is nice to read these kinds of emails. It makes me so proud of the community we are in.

Te Ahu o Te Reo Māori is offering a new programme called ‘Takitini’ (which means to be unified, to be a collective, to have a shared direction). This is a whole-school-whānau-community approach where they will provide the resources, the programme and the pūkenga (tutors) to teach within school communities.

These courses are free to our community.  This would require 30 participants including staff, BOT, whānau etc to commit to the 20-week programme.

Key Points:

  • Provider: Kāuru - endorsed by, and in conjunction with Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Raukawa and Te Atiawa

  • Programme Name: Takitini - Catering to NPKA alone

  • Hours:120 hours over 20 weeks (beginning Term 2)

  • Level: negotiable to suit each school and their whānau/community

  • Venue: TBA

  • Participants: 30 people at each venue - consisting of staff, BOT, whānau members of staff and whānau of ākonga.

  • Each pūkenga has the capability to work during the day or evening as negotiated.

  • The goal is for this 2023 cohort to continue a 20wk programme in 2024 doing the next level of te reo Māori.

If you are interested in doing this programme, please contact me asap so I can understand who is interested and let me know what day and time would suit you. We could also join another school depending on the numbers.

Gala

It is not far away now for the Pukerua Bay School gala, and we are really looking forward to holding this event. It has been quite a while since we’ve had a school gala and it is going to be awesome to see the whole community come together and enjoy the day together.

It does take a community to make this day a success, so if you have some time on the day to help please click on this link and volunteer your help.

I want to thank all those people who have spent countless hours already behind the scenes ensuring this day is going to be a success.

Movin March

What a great day today when we launched Movin Day and coincided with a fundraiser for Eskdale school in Napier. It was great to see the students being active and also understanding that they are supporting another school that needs a helping hand. Awesome stuff Pukerua Bay School!
