What's happening in Toru this week

Christine Burgess —

Toru has been transformed this week read on to see what has been happening in this classroom

This week Toru was transformed into the ‘School of Magical Medicine for Young Doctors and Wizards’. We started by creating models of eyes. We learnt sometimes people make models that look like the real thing but don’t work like the real thing. Other times people make working models that don’t look exactly like the real thing. Our models reduced an eye to its key parts of retina (a piece of card) and cornea (a magnifying strip). When light from the window went through the cornea the image was projected onto the retina. Just like in real eyes our images were upside down.

Next we explored acids and bases. We made sherbet. We also measured the pH of the various ingredients in sherbet, and other chemicals, using indicator paper. These experiments taught us the importance of making careful observations and recording our results. On Thursday we made our own indicator solution using red cabbage. It was great fun making the solution change colour with different chemicals and adding different substances together to cause bubbling and fizzing.
