Changes at Broomfield School

Kimberley Hobson —

Our Kuras overarching theme of 'Change' has seen a variety of changes explored by our Tamaki and Kaiako in Terms 1 and 2.

The last few years have seen many different changes for our tamariki and kaiako. Changes to our communities, our country, our landscapes, and our learning. This inspired Broomfield School to take on the theme of change for 2021.

This theme has seen our junior school exploring the changes that have happened over time in New Zealand and our local areas, while our seniors have focused on the changes they have and are making in themselves.

A highlight for our years 0-5 was some EOTC experiences at Ferrymead Heritage Park and the Time Tunnel/Christchurch Gondola.

An insight into how our nation lived 100 years ago was on show at Ferrymead this week with children role-playing as turn of the century citizens. This amazing experience transported the children back in time and gave them the opportunity to really see what life used to be like. We had the chance to be shop keepers measuring out produce on the scales, cookie making in the old bakery, attend school with the strict Mr. Grey, and help Mrs. Grey with the housework. Ending the day with a tram ride was a highlight too.

This experience was followed by another day exploring history in Christchurch. We excitedly lined up and waited for our turns to bravely ride the gondola up Mount Cavendish, taking in the sights, before exploring the time tunnel and learning about how Canterbury was created and what life was like for Māori and early European settlers.

After lunch we eagerly began our walk down the Bridle Path as many settlers before we would have done, enjoying the views over Lyttleton, the harbour, and Quail Island. It was a long way to the bottom, but it was fantastic to see children collecting sticks, stones, helping each other, and stepping outside our comfort zones by trying something new.

Our years 6-8 have been focusing on themselves and the changes they can make in our Kura and our local community. This year we have embraced the William Pike Challenge, taking on outdoor activities, passion projects, and community service.

Our major focus this term was developing our leadership skills to help bring about change. Our year 8s attended National Young Leaders Day where they heard from a range of inspirational New Zealand leaders. We followed that up with learning about Leadership for a week with Harold in the Life Education truck.

Another jam-packed term of learning and growing at Broomfield School!
