Term One fun at Cust School

Miriam Bell —

The Great Cust School Easter Hunt is a Term One tradition that always brings a lot of laughs and fun.

One of the wonderful things about a small country school, is the opportunities it provides for whole school activities. Consisting of 7 classrooms and 3 syndicates, we often come together in a variety of ways to foster tuakana/teina and celebrate our special school culture.

At the end of Term One, we always gather together for the purpose of The Great Easter Hunt. Children are divided into vertical whanau groupings across the school, with each Year 8 student given the task of leading their group to find and decipher a range of clues scattered across the school, as well as complete physical and artistic challenges as a team. The challenges and codes range from mathematical to theatric, and encourage full team participation.

When deciphered, the final clue gives an instruction, and the first team to follow that instruction, is the first team to get their hand-crafted Easter baskets filled with Easter treats! All children leave with smiles, treats, and a new confidence in their place as a part of the unique fabric that is Cust School.

The Great Easter Hunt provides a magical opportunity to develop relationships across the school, as tamariki work together toward a common goal. It's also a fabulous opportunity as a teacher to watch your students utilise the 'front-end' of the curriculum as they solve problems, manage themselves, and cooperate in such an enjoyable context.
