Broomfield School - Back in action!

Kimberley Hobson —

What a crazy year 2020 is turning out to be!

Over the lockdown period out teachers were busy preparing and sharing many different learning activities and events for our Broomfield School community with a focus on staying connected. Our students were baking, building, painting, dressing up, singing, dancing, riding motorbikes and flipping on trampolines. To further help us stay connected our Student Council organised events that would have normally run at school, online. Our annual Pirate Day (usually held when we close the school pool at the end of Term 1) was a hit, with students, teachers and parents involved in dressing up as pirates, building pirate ships and taking on pirate accents! One of our Deputy Head Girls also ran her planned fundraiser for Gumboot Friday online, raising money for the I am hope foundation. At Broomfield School, we take pride in the way we show our appreciation for soldiers who have fought to keep our country safe. We saw many of our students display wreaths and poppies on ANZAC day on their gates and in their gardens.

Back at school, our students settled in quickly to the normal school routine. Our school-wide focus has been on Aotearoa "Our own backyard". From our juniors to our seniors we've had virtual field trips to Kaikoura and Mt Cook, holidays planned all over the country, gotten creative with New Zealand native birds, and learnt lots about inspiring New Zealanders.

Reporting has been put aside this term, instead, we have chosen to focus on Learning Conferences at the beginning of Term 3. We see this as a great opportunity to celebrate what the children and their whanau have achieved together at home and at school. Highlighting the positives out of the whole experience and acknowledging not only the hard work put in from our staff but also from our school community as a whole.

With many of our normal school events cancelled this term we are looking forward to getting our students back out into the community with camps and other exciting events planned for the rest of the year.
