Starting School

To help organise New Entrants into Pūtahi Belfast School, it is helpful if you enrol your child at least 6 to 8 months prior to your child’s fifth birthday.

Cohort Entry

The Pūtahi Belfast School Board has adopted Cohort Entry from the beginning of 2025. Starting from Term 1, 2025 there will be two entry points, the first at the beginning and the second cohort will be in the middle of the term, with start dates specified by the Ministry of Education. There will be an exception for children who require a slow transition to school, usually those tamariki that are being supported by Early Intervention.

The benefits of Cohort Entry are supported by a recent Education Review Office (ERO) study (May 2022). A summary of this study can be viewed by following the link provided - https://ero.govt.nz/our-research/starting-school-together-what-do-we-know-about-cohort-entry-summary

Enrolment Information

Pūtahi Belfast School has an enrolment scheme in place which means you need to be living within the enrolment zone area for your child to have automatic entry to our school. Please open the attachment below to view the current School Zone.

Prior to an enrolment form being completed, we will ask you to provide confirmation of your address, either a copy of a utility account or rental/purchase agreement.

When enrolling your child we will need a copy of:

  • your child's NZ Birth Certificate and/or NZ Passport

  • immunisation details.

The enrolment scheme also outlines priorities for the acceptance of students living outside our zone. Please navigate here to our enrolment section for more information about Out Of Zone Enrolments.

Please email enrolments@belfast.school.nz for further enrolment information.
