Karen Palmer —

There has been a lot going on in sports over the last couple of weeks. The end of summer sports and the start of winter sports is fast approaching.

Summer sports only have a few weeks left, with most finishing the last week of term.

Winter sports permission forms are available and needed to be returned by Friday 22 March. Contact Miss Palmer sport@queens.school.nz if you were unable to get your forms in by this date. Remember that all summer sports fees need to be paid in full before you can play a winter sport. We are offering Netball, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Ice Hockey, Curling, Badminton, Rugby 7’s and Rugby 10’s this year. As always we thank the coaches, managers and teachers who support these sports. If you are interested in being involved in Sport at Queen’s as a coach or official please contact Karen Palmer sport@queens.school.nz

Our students have had several opportunities to develop their leadership skills over the last few weeks. We had 18 girls attend the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association (OSSSA) and Sport Otago - Student Coaches Workshop at the Edgar Centre. The girls had sessions on how to teach a skill, getting to know your athlete, planning a coaching session and sports injury and prevention. They also had a session with a coach in their selected sport. Four of our senior students attended the Sports Leaders Workshop hosted by OSSSA at the Sargood Centre. This workshop included sharing best practice, planning an event and information about the big picture of sport in secondary schools. We had 10 students support the annual primary schools triathlon run by Sport Otago. The Year 10 students encouraged and supported the many Year 5 - 8 students who competed in this event.

Basketball Otago is hosting a Rules and Refereeing course at Queen’s High School on Friday 5 April at 12.15 in A1. This course is for all girls playing basketball but is also open to anyone from the community who would like to be involved in basketball. Contact Karen Palmer if you are interested in attending.
