Sports Corner

Nikki Stumbles —

Kia kaha e hoa mai. Let’s go team.

The beginning of Term 4 and summer sports is a good time to remind us all that working together puts us on the path to success.

Student Success

Basketball

Making her debut for the New Zealand Junior Tall Ferns Under 17 Team, Elise Carline spent some of her holidays in Papua New Guinea at the FIBA Under 17 Oceania Championships. Elise's main role in the team was to rebound and she really rose to the challenge, helping her team make the finals against Australia. From this second placing on the Oceania stage, we will be watching with interest where Elise goes next, as she pursues her passion, representing the country with pride.

Otago Rugby League

Rhianah Knopp was one of four Otago girls who played in the South Island Scorpions Team at the National Girls’ Youth Tournament, held at the Owen Delany Park in Taupo during the first week of the school holidays. Rhianah is to be congratulated on her fine effort and dedication to Rugby League.

Otago Māori Rugby

Congratulations to Mahinārangi Maihi, Nina Rakete, and Rivah Ferguson who were selected for the Otago Māori Under 17 Team and Aria McFelin and Lucian Tipa, who were in the Under 15 Team. The teams competed in the Te Waipounamu Tournament held at Kettle Park, with the Under 17 Team finishing Runner Up, while the Under 15 Team won their grade, after a count back on tries. It is great to see these girls showcasing their talent on the field.

Multisport

The Multisport season has started, with the Otago Club Duathlon Championships held recently at Macandrew Bay. Congratulations to Eve Kelleher, who won the Under 16 category and was the 5th female overall, after her 2.5 kilometre run, 20 kilometre bike and 5 kilometre run to finish. She also competed in the 2 kilometre option as part of the reinstated Port Chalmers to Dunedin Race, now held on Te Ara Moana. Eve finished first in the female section and second overall, clocking a time of 6 minutes 44 seconds. Well done Eve.

Ice Figure Skating Nationals

Queen’s was well represented at the Ice Figure Skating Nationals held in Dunedin. Maddi Booth competed in the Juvenile category and Sophia Blaikie was in Basic Novice. Jazz Evangelou, unfortunately, was not able to compete at this year’s National Championships. Jazz withdrew herself due to injury, but 2023 has been an exceptional year for this athlete. She has attended the ISU Four Continents training camp in the USA, she represented New Zealand in Singapore, and has trained in Australia. Taking yourself out of a competition of this magnitude was a massive decision, but Jazz has shown incredible care and responsibility.

Football

Four of our 1st XI Football players were selected in the Southern United 2023 Girls' National League Squad. This is a commendable achievement for Neve Darlington, Yui Ishikawa, Maia Scott, and Charlotte Summers. We will follow your progress with interest.

Hockey

Over the holidays, Renee Geddes played for Otago in the Under 15 Hockey Tournament in Christchurch. Renee was named Most Valuable Player for her team. Well done, Renee.

Acknowledgement

I wish to personally express my utmost gratitude to the many people who contribute towards providing opportunities for our students – you make sport at Queen’s High School ‘happen’. It is sincerely appreciated – thank you, thank you!

Uniforms

Now that winter sports have wrapped up, all uniforms and tracksuits should have been returned to the Sports Office. Many teams have already been issued with summer uniforms, and as always, we expect the players to wear these with pride and return them at the end of their competition.

Summer Sports

As we move into Term 4 sports, we are always looking for support for our teams. If you are interested in coaching or managing a team, please get in touch via email: sport@queens.school.nz

Sporting Success Outside School

If your child competes in other sport outside of Queen’s High School, we would like to acknowledge their achievements on our Social Media platforms. Please email; sport@queens.school.nz
