Students' Summer Surfing Success

Matthew Sherborne —

Students from Queen’s High School competed in two events at Westport over the weekend of 27th-29th January.

The first event was the Connect Group Grom Series event 2. In the U16 girls division Tessa Gabbott took first place with Rewa Morrison in second. Both girls surfed very well with Tessa gaining an impressive final score of 15.44 out of 20. Tessa and Rewa also made the final of the U18 girls division and this time Rewa gained second place and Tessa got third. Sari Ayson also competed and made the semi-finals. Well done. It is inspiring to see Queen’s High School students on the podium competing against the best surfers in the South Island.

Tessa, Rewa and Sari also competed in a separate event ‘The Cape Classic’ also held at Westport. They entered the Open womens division. Sari made the semi-final and Rewa and Tessa made the final. Rewa got third and Tessa got fourth. This was an impressive effort in big challenging waves. Well done girls. Event 3 and 4 of the Grom series are held at Christchurch and Kaikoura later in the year in April.
