Year 10 Cromwell Camp – “A Taste of Central”

Lesley Signal-Cambridge —

Biking, climbing, swimming, walking, puzzling, opp-shopping, history, visiting …

19 girls and three staff had 5 fun days in Central Otago. We biked the rail trail from Clyde to Alexandra, then returned on the River track. On the way up, we visited Gabriel’s Gully to begin learning about the gold-rush of the 1860’s, and the impacts it has had on the Otago region.

The Alexandra and Wanaka recycling centres were fun to visit. Puzzling World kept us busy for some time, and some girls are now world-famous as participants in the Puzzling World web-site promotion. We enjoyed the scenery and learning on the Bannockburn Sluicings walk.

We were delighted to meet and hear from Ex-Girl Annabelle Bulk about her career in the Viticulture industry. Annabelle is the NZ Young Winemaker of the Year for 2019. We learned about the growing employment opportunities available in the Horticulture and Viticulture sectors in Central Otago. With an eye on sustainability, we also visited the Central WormWorx, and learnt about how worms are dealing to the organic rubbish created by shops, individuals and businesses in Central Otago.

After collecting blossoms from Thyme and Elderflower – everyone returned with some Elderflower cordial and Thyme salt. We enjoyed our stay at the Cromwell Top 10 Camp. A nice end to the year.
