Otago Surfing Championships 2021

Tash Civil —

Congratulations to our Queen's surfing girls for some excellent results at the Otago Championships in the weekend.

Last weekend the Otago Surfing Championships were held at Blackhead Beach. Day One saw some pretty challenging conditions for the competitors with some big sets marching towards the line up. Day Two the surf was pumping. Rewa Morrison and Tessa Gabbott made their way to the Under 14 final, beating many of the boys along the way, and came away with 3rd and 4th placings. Sari Ayson and Bella Burns also surfed really well in this division as well as in the Junior Women's Division, catching some great waves over the weekend.

The Junior Women’s Division saw Queen’s High School students take 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In 3rd place, Year 9 student Tessa Gabbott was really pushing the older surfers and is definitely one to watch in the future. Our New Zealand Under 18 Champion, Jaya Reardon, came in 2nd to Anika Ayson who took the win.

In the Open Women's Division it was an all Queen’s final. Three students, Anika, Jaya and Taya taking on their teacher, Ms Tash Civil. Anika, who was in form all weekend, took the win with some amazing and stylish surfing on the perfect left handers that were coming in. Tash Civil gained 2nd place, with Jaya 3rd and Taya 4th.

Great surfing from the whole team and we are all looking forward to the Canterbury Surfing Championships next month.
