Football First X1
Last Thursday, our First XI football team went to the Logan Park turf for the Otago secondary schools football final against Columba. The team were going into the game unbeaten and had not conceded a goal in the competition. There were some nerves and excitement ahead of the big clash. The game started off a close contest, both teams proving they were hard to break down. A hand ball from Columba in the box was what it took to break the deadlock: Charlotte Summers stepped up to bury a penalty and give Queen’s the lead. A tense game throughout and when Madi Glossop had a great finish near the end of the game, Queen’s supporters could breathe a little. The final finished 2-0 and was our closest contest of the season.
The team now heads to Nationals in Nelson at the start of September. We wish them luck at what will be a highly competitive tournament and where our team will be playing against the best school football teams in the country.
Red Football Sum Up
The Red Football team has an awesome season making it through undefeated to win the Girls Secondary Schools Division 2 competition. There were some cold Thursday’s out on the pitch but everyone was committed and they played great as a team. Thank you to the whānau and supporters who were out there every week to cheer them on and a big thanks to Rob Bray their coach.
Hockey
We have had a very successful season for hockey this year. Our First XI played on Monday nights and our 6-a-side played on Tuesdays. We had lost eight seniors from the previous year, however we gained a large group of enthusiastic juniors. The girls worked well all season turning up for practices at 7am on Thursday mornings. The First XI team were rewarded with all their hard work by finishing at the top of Division 2 in round robin. We made it into the finals for the first time since 2013.
The final was played in very cold wintery conditions. It was a hard-fought game against Otago Girl’s High School who had come down from Division 1 halfway through the season. The half-time score was 2-0 to Otago Girls and unfortunately, they managed to get a few more in the second half of the game finishing with a 6-0 win. The score, however, was definitely not a reflection of how tight the game was played.
The 6-a-side team was made up of new players to the sport and even though they were often playing more experienced players they really grew throughout the season. The team finished 6th overall.
We were able to celebrate the end of the season farewelling three of our Year 13s Jorja Gibbons, Emily Hewson and Olivia Adie who have given a lot to Queen’s Hockey over the last 5 years.
Thank you also to Sandra Lyall (11 aside team Manager), Emma Maxwell (6 aside coach) and all the parents and supporters for encouraging us on the sideline.
Well done to both teams for a great season!
