9SMI Humanities

Lesley Signal-Cambridge —

As part of our learning about “What makes a Queen’s Girl”, 9 Smith have been visited by some guest speakers. One of these guests was Mrs Colleen Lyons - a previous pupil, teacher and Assistant Principal of Queen’s, who now works hard with the Queen’s Ex-Girls Association.

Mrs Lyons gave an enjoyable presentation on aspects of the history of Queen’s High School, and talked about some of the characters of previous years. The girls heard about teachers’ black gowns becoming covered in chalk dust, and about the hats and gloves students had to wear to and from school. We also heard about the tricks students employed to shorten their kilts, skirts and gym frocks!!

Mrs Lyons brought along some student work-books from the early years of the school, and we admired the very tidy writing! She also brought items of the school’s previous uniforms - including …. those terrible ROMPERS!!!

Members of the class enjoyed modelling items of uniform, and several class members were excited to hear that Mrs Lyons knew their mothers, aunts or cousins when they were students in years gone by.

Thanks, Mrs Lyons. We have a much better understanding of what it means to be “once a Queen’s Girl - always a Queen’s Girl!”.
