Reverse Science Fair

Allison Dodds —

On 12 February, all of the Year 12's who are studying Biology, Chemistry or Physics this year hopped on the bus and went to the Otago Museum, for the Reverse Science Fair.

This event was a celebration of the International Day of Girls and Women in Science, and it involved lots of really interesting hands-on activities and demonstrations. The students reassembled broken crockery, constructed knee models, arranged the bones of a skeleton, handled and observed real, dissected deer knees, investigated white powders, extracted DNA from bananas, dipped into some Marine Biology, learned more about purifying water.... and many more experiences. The opportunity to talk to passionate women who work in a wide range of scientific fields was a highlight of the event. This was a great chance for our young women to find out more about the many career paths available in the Sciences.
