‘Inspiring the Futures’ of Year 9’s

Penny Kershaw —

Queen's was privileged to take part in the national career programme ‘Inspiring the Future’.

We chose seven awesome wahine (some of whom were QHS ex-girls) to come along and share their career journeys with us, and the Year 9’s had to ask 20 questions to try and guess what their current job is!

A huge thank you to our career ‘role-models’: Barbara Olah (NZ Fire Service and National Manager for Women’s Development), Kim Bailey (NZ Police), Lee Maher (Medical Radiation Technologist), Caitlin Berry-Kilgour (Scientist), Justine Weatherall (Photographer), Cheryl Adams (CEO, Animation Research) and Heather Scott-Smith (Construction Manager) for giving up your time to be part of this.

The girls did an amazing job of asking great questions and showed respect and interest in the advice the career ‘role-models’ had to offer. The QHS Pathways team hope that the girls all took something away from the experience, either learning about a career they didn’t know existed, or a small piece of advice that may help them start thinking about their future plans.

Thank you also to Haley McManus of ‘My Next Move’ (Business South) for supporting us in hosting the programme. We are planning to host this again for our Year 11 students later in the year.
