Girlboss Edge Healthcare Workshop

Caitlyn Petrie —

During the holidays a number of Queen’s students completed a ten day online Girlboss healthcare course. During the ten days we heard from a number of healthcare professionals; they explained what they do, and what inspired them to do it.

On the first two days we heard from Dr Hinemoa Elder and Dr Justin Sung, they both left us feeling empowered and definitely inspired. On days four and five we heard from Dr Miriam and Dr Nini Prescott who were also both truly inspiring. We were able to send our questions in for them to answer so we could make the most out of their time, learn new skills and gain information that will help us in our careers.

During the course we also had a variety of different modules to complete such as personal branding and finding out what our top values are, networking - where we connected through a website called Icebreaker to meet with the other young women taking part in this workshop. We also did an interviewing module and a linkedin account setup module which is another platform we are now able to use to communicate with people who can help us gain opportunities, especially work.

After we completed the modules we also had the opportunity to book a 1:1 mentoring session with one of the many mentors available to us on this course. These mentors were from a large range of different backgrounds and all did something completely different which meant there really was someone for everyone to learn from.

Lastly we completed a healthcare challenge. We had four choices to choose from and we could either write a written submission or produce a video for a visual and auditory submission.

Overall this was an amazing experience and we all definitely finished the programme feeling more confident about our careers and what our next steps should be. What’s more, we also all left with a large group of young women standing by us, sharing the same passion we do.

From our experience, if in the future you are offered any Girlboss opportunities, we definitely recommend that you should take them up because you learn so many valuable skills whilst also having fun with a whole group of new people.
