Outward Bound

Daisy Kitto-Thomas —

Last December, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend a three week Outward Bound Course in Anakiwa. Thrown into a group with 12 strangers, none of us knew the journey that was about to come.

With no phones, and no contact to the outside world for three weeks, we very quickly bonded and formed strong friendships. Throughout the course we were enabled to go on various outdoor missions such as tramping, sailing, kayaking, rock climbing, and a two night solo in the bush. The purpose of these missions was to push ourselves outside of our comfort zone to allow for new self growth and discovery. From nearly capsizing a half million dollar yacht, to four hours of bush bashing in an attempt to find a suitable place to camp, the 12 of us learnt a lot of lessons about the essence of teamwork, resilience and determination; lessons that will stick with us forever. One of the requirements to complete the course was to also run a half marathon - 21km. This proved to be one of the biggest mental challenges I have ever overcome, however, it was one of the most rewarding things I had ever completed. Overall, Outward Bound was one of the most valuable and life-changing experiences. It enabled me to undergo an incredible journey of self discovery and growth that never would've happened had I not attended the course. I have come out the other end of the course with life lessons that will stick with me forever, and new friendships that will last a lifetime. I believe every student should have the opportunity to attend Outward Bound and reap the transformative benefits. I would like to thank the Otago Community Trust for granting me a scholarship that allowed me to attend this course. Without their support I wouldn't have been able to experience this amazing opportunity.
