Student Shadow- Jaiyushka's day as a Project Manager

Jaiyushka Pratap (Year 12) —

After hinting to Mrs Signal-Cambridge about my interest in pursuing a career in the construction industry, she helped me make connections with people in that field.

This led to the opportunity to go out to meet a project management team in Dunedin, RCP who are part of the massive operation of the new hospital build.

It was a worthwhile experience as I received a lot of exposure to what the job looked like in motion from different people and perspectives. I met with the regional manager here Bruce, who explained the logistics of the role. I then got to visit some ongoing and completed projects with Hamish around the city such as the new Otago University research facility near the Dental School.

This then led to meeting Brier, who is currently managing a job at the company as well as completing her diploma at the Otago Polytech and Regan, a recent graduate who showed me around the new hospital site.

This experience has certainly helped me to look at my options for the future and has given me a greater insight into what project managing is like and the overall broad spectrum of construction.

It would be awesome to see more young women getting involved in this industry as it has a lot to offer. I'm very grateful for the connections I’ve made, thanks to the help of everyone including Mark Cartwright from Workforce Central Dunedin and Mrs Signal-Cambridge.
