Pathway Planning: Choosing subjects for 2021

Lesley Signal-Cambridge —

Students in Years 10 - 12 are beginning to choose the subjects that will make up their course of study for 2021. Parents have been sent the link to the Subject Guide - which can also be accessed by visiting the Queen’s website, where the flip-book can be found under the Academic link.

Students and their families can access a range of helpful information and links to aid them in wise decision making by visiting their Year Level Google Classroom coursework - the links are listed under the title ‘Subject Selection’. There are also several relevant links included in the front of the Subject Selection Guide, and in the email to parents, sent last week.

Students are advised to think about their interests and strengths, while also identifying any areas of skill they need development in. They should plan a course which will allow them to challenge themselves, to gain or retain a broad set of skills and, as they move up the school, a programme which will meet the entry criteria for their next steps in study, training or employment.

To support students and their whānau in this decision making process, there are several opportunities to meet and discuss ideas around subject choice:

  • The Careers Advisor and Year Level Deans are available to discuss subject choice with students each Friday during the extended formtime.

  • Form teachers and subject teachers know students well, and are good sources of information.

  • During the final week of term, families can make times to meet with the Careers Advisor, after school, by emailing lesley@queens.school.nz to arrange a time.

  • October 15th - appointments can be made using the School Interviews site. This is the same evening as a Senior reporting evening - but all families from Years 10 -12 are welcome to attend for Career and Subject discussions also.

Below are some useful sources of information, to aid parents in having career and subject discussions with young people/rangatahi.
