Outward Bound

Kaiya Casswell (Year 13) —

Last month I attended an Outward Bound course in the Queen Charlotte Sounds.

During the course I spent three weeks in Anakiwa challenging myself physically and mentally through a variety of activities.

Each day we woke up at 6:15am and started our day with a 3.2 km run and a dip in the ocean. We went on tramps, we kayaked down the Pelorus River and went through the rapids. We sailed through the Sounds and dodged ferries along the way.

One of the biggest challenges was the solo trip. This is where you spend two nights by yourself in the bush. Here I was lucky enough to make friends with a Weka. Over the three weeks I made many friends and learnt a lot about myself. This was a great experience that I will always remember.
