Rowing - A new boat and a new breed of rowers

Queen's rowing parents fundraising pays off with our new $12,000 quad.
Queen's rowing has worked hard over the past few years fundraising, but in the last year massively stepped up their efforts with the goal set to buy a new quad. Queen's already owned a quad (the infamous Woody) which was bought about twenty years ago, however remaining competitive was becoming more and more difficult as newer boats, built on better technology were appearing in schools.

The new quad arrived at Otago Club Champs with the girls going out in their first race and knocking 21 seconds off their best ever time. That made all the car washes, quiz nights, murder mysteries and toilet paper sales worth it. We were also proud to share our new purchase with King's High School who, with a Queen's student as their coxswain lead their novice crew to achieve a win in their heat and an impressive fifth in the Novice Mens A Final at the South Island Club Champs. Our grateful thanks goes to last years coach Penny Farrell for helping drive fundraising events and our best wishes go to her as she hangs up her coaching megaphone and takes on new challenges next year. We are also grateful for the support of Laszlo Boats NZ by allowing us to pay for the boat in instalments with the final instalment being made this week.

There was a good turnout of new rowers and the return of our favourite senior coxswain Lily Stedman, at the 'Have a Row' morning at the North End Rowing Club on Sunday. It is an exciting season ahead as MAADI, the NZ Secondary Schools Championships is back in the South Island this year. If anyone is interested in rowing there is still time to join, please see Karen Palmer for more information.
