Year 9 English
In English, 9GEI spent the first half of the term focusing on language features that are prevalent in informal, persuasive letters. At the end of the unit, they were tasked with creating a letter that encouraged the reader to take up a sport or hobby. A personal register, second person pronouns and an inspirational tone were all called for. Here is Elsie Munro's letter:
Hey Annie, I know you love sports but what’s dragging you away from football? Is it the 90 minute halves, or maybe it’s the cold mornings, or is it the early start? I don’t know but I do know that once you have played a game you will definitely want to keep going. Why? Well....I have made so many new friends playing this sport which have become unbreakable friendships and we all love the sport we play, that's how we bond. Being in a football team is great because everyone is so supportive of each other and always happy for one another’s achievements.I love that when I play football it feels like I’m a cheetah hunting for the ball and when you get it, you feel the wind in your hair, the mud under your feet and the sound of everyone cheering saying your name. When you score it all stops for a second and everyone comes rushing over like a herd of horses giving you high fives and hugs, and you think isn’t this the best? When I get up on the Saturday morning before my game, I’m filled with excitement to see my mates and to play the best I can. I know winter isn’t the ideal time - when it’s cold and sometimes even rainy, but would you rather play on a scorching hot day and by the end you look like a shrivelled tomato? In conclusion, I think you should definitely play football, my favourite sport and now it can be yours too. Sorry if I offended you by calling it football when some people call it soccer, but my brain just chooses which one to say depending on the day.
Thanks for reading Elsie 🙂
