Queen's Dance News

Nicole Rogers —

2024 is shaping up to be another exciting year for Dance at Queen’s.

Term 1 has started with all Dance classes from Year 9-13 having guest tutors teach them varied styles including Afro Fusion and Contemporary with Catherine
Duval, Hip Hop with Alyssa Slade and Kapa Haka with Queen's senior students leading the sessions. We are so lucky to have so many talented people in our community to help fill our kete aronui.

Competitive Hip Hop crews are also about to kick off for the year with auditions being held next week during the lunch break in the Movement Room. This always brings an electric vibe to the dance floor. Competitive crews will be selected and start rehearsing on a regular basis towards competing in the New Zealand Schools Hip Hop regional and national competitions later in the year.

In other news, Safera Wintrup is our Dance Associate for 2024. Safera is in Year 12 and began dancing at Rasa school of dance in 2015, and has studied Dance at Queen's since 2021, and has been a member of the Otago Dancers since 2023. She also competes in competitive Hip Hop crews and has successfully coached competitive crews at Queens for 3 years. Safera is trained in Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Commercial Dance and has received several awards and scholarships in her examinations. Recently receiving top marks in her dance exams with the Asia Pacific Dance Association. This is top marks out of all APDA students throughout NZ, Australia, and Thailand. Congratulations, Safera!
