Congratulations to Brooklyn Taylor whose poem ‘dear book’ made the place-getters list for the prestigious New Zealand Poetry Society’s International Poetry Competition.

In a field of over 1,700 entries from around the world, she received a ‘Commended’ placing for her clever poem. Brooklyn is a talented writer and we have no doubts she will go on to achieve further great things with her writing. Well done, Brooklyn.

Staff member Samantha Montgomerie also received a ‘Commended’ placing in the Open Adult section for her poem ‘Myths’.

Here is Brooklyn's poem for you to enjoy.

dear book

leave the light on

so i can read

plead in your pages

palpable presence

dwindled into ink

painted on pages

your words,

bleed into your soul,

spine, synopsis, spiel

in your narrative

metaphors are the medium

of the art you paint

but i won’t prop you up

beside mona lisa to

let them lavish you in louvre

selfishly, i’ll keep you

prised possession on my shelf

pick you up when sun’s gone

read you all myself

so will you? will you keep the light on?
