Programme Incubator: Site visit to Dunedin Public Hospital

Lesley Signal-Cambridge —

Programme Incubator is a programme run by the Southern District Health Board which introduces Year 12 and 13 students to a range of careers in the health sector.

On this site visit to Dunedin Public Hospital on Friday 13 March, we explored 4 different career options.

We visited the Hospital Pharmacy and learnt about the range of tasks hospital pharmacists do, including making up prescriptions for in-patients and outpatients, researching medicines for clinicians, and distributing medicines to the wards.

We also visited the Children’s Unit and learnt about paediatric nursing and play specialists. The final areas we explored were the Sleep Lab and the Respitory Lab, where we learnt about the roles of Clinical Physiologists.

We all enjoyed this very much as it gave us an opportunity to see some careers which we not have known about or much of, and we are grateful for the work of Jeff Melville and Phoebe Wylie for organising the programme for us.
