Summer Sport Registrations

Students received an email earlier this week regarding registering to play sport in Term 4. The Google Form stipulates that they must be able to attend both practices and games when considering signing up and that they agree to having discussed with their legal guardian the sports they are committing to. Registrations strictly close on Wednesday 14 September.

Winter Sport Season

All winter sports codes have concluded for the season. Many Queen’s High School teams made finals in their respective grades; Senior A Basketball, Junior A Basketball, Rugby 10s, Senior C Netball, 9A Netball, and the 9B Netball Team. The latter two teams were both victorious, defeating teams from St Hilda’s Collegiate School and Taieri College respectively. All other sports teams had successful seasons, competing strongly in their grades. Coaches enjoyed seeing real improvement in players as the season progressed.

Tournament Week

The 1st XI Football Team had a fantastic tournament here in sunny Dunedin. Tournaments at home can sometimes miss the tournament atmosphere, however the team managed to do a range of activities, as well as enjoy some wonderful football. The team comprised of 15 junior and only two senior students, so were certainly not seeded in the tournament. Players combined really well and did themselves proud, finishing top of their pool and making the semi-final, where they lost 1-3 to a powerful Columba College team. On the final day, they played off for 3rd and 4th against St Hilda’s Collegiate School. Queen’s fought hard, but unfortunately lost against another strong and physical team. Each day the team had challenges, ranging from jumping in the sea, to including the parents in the best supporter hat competition. Neve Darlington, captain, led by example both on and off the field and was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award for Tournament. It was a great week of football finishing fourth from 19 teams. We are excited to see what the future holds for this young team. Thank you to Rob Bray, Coach and Ms Stanley Brown, Manager for their support of the team throughout the season.

The Senior A Netball Team travelled to Timaru to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament. The team won their first three games, but unfortunately an injury to a player saw the team having to rearrange combinations and positions on court, which took some adjustment. The players continued to give their best and worked hard. The final day of play resulted in two further wins, which was a great way to conclude four days playing outside in fabulous conditions. The team finished 13th from 30 teams in the B Grade and look forward to an even higher placing in 2023, where the tournament will be held in Invercargill. Some real promise was displayed by players throughout the season; exciting times ahead. Well done to the players and a big thank you to Lana Morrison, Coach, Ms Hanning, Manager, and Ernie Mather, Umpire.

The Senior A Basketball Team competed in the Basketball New Zealand Southern Cup Tournament held at the Edgar Centre. The team experienced tough competition throughout the week, but managed a well-deserved win against Taieri College in their final encounter. The tournament was a great opportunity for the players to experience competition against schools from throughout the South Island. We wish to acknowledge Tony Carline, Coach, and Meagan Stanley Brown, Manager, for their time and the wonderful sideline support.

Volunteers

We are truly grateful to all our volunteers. Our sports teams would not have performed so creditably without the support of our community and school coaches and managers.

Sports Uniforms

Some students still have their winter sports uniform. These must be returned to the Sports Office or Student Office next week at the latest.
