Lucy Hayward Prefect Speech

Lucy Hayward —

What are you waiting for? If you are really waiting for something then you are really waiting for nothing because more often than not that is what you end up with. Very rarely do good things come in life from just sitting around and waiting, that isn’t the way life is. Instead life gives good things to those who initiate it.

The things that you want in life whether it be people or dreams don’t just happen to you, unless you start moving first. When you start to move, you start to attract those things, but the moment you stop, so do they. This is what some like to refer to as ‘motion-attraction’ which is when you move you attract other things that begin to move toward you, because everything worthwhile is uphill.

Every dream or idea you've had is all up that hill and the only way you are getting there is by being intentional with your steps. You wouldn’t stand at the bottom of Baldwin St and just wait to get to the top. You know that you don’t get to the top unless you make the conscious decision to get there.

No one has ever gone uphill accidentally. If you ever speak to a successful person and ask how they got to the top of the mountain or hill? They will not reply “I have no idea”, the truth is they made it to the top and they know exactly what they did to get there. It takes effort and energy and it takes time because everything worthwhile is uphill.

You will have to make a choice in every single thing that you do but when you make that decision keep in mind that in the end that choice makes you, just like the choices that I make, make me. But if you make a bad choice today you can repair it tomorrow, you don’t wait for it to fix itself. If you make a good choice today then you prepare to make tomorrow an even better day.

We all kind of think that tomorrow will have more promise than today or that next year has more promise than today, this way of thinking is very unfulfilling because there is nothing guaranteed about it, however, the promise of today is very fulfilling because you have it right now and it is in your hands. When you think about it, now is all we have. Yesterday’s gone and tomorrow is a promise so take advantage of the now. The most rewarding thing in life is to seize the moment, to seize the day and if you don’t you could lose the moment.

I challenge you to get up one morning during the weekend and watch the sunrise and yes it is early and yes it is the weekend but you will only ever get to see that sunrise once it changes ever so slightly every day.

Remember that your best today sets you up for success for tomorrow, don’t be that person waiting for good things to come to them because the only way to get what you want is through perseverance and intended movements. A great example of this, is for those who get to the canteen first are more likely to get what they want because they made purposeful steps to get there first. Thank you and have a great day!
