Year 12 Biology Fieldtrip

Allison Dodds —

On June 9th, the two Year 12 Biology classes headed to Portobello for the day, to learn more about the marine world.

We were the first group to visit the NZ Marine Studies Centre since before lockdown, so they were really excited to see us. The classes worked in smaller groups to learn about a range of different marine animals, with our focus being on feeding and digestion. Each group did two dissections, of a cancer crab and a spiny dogfish, as well as looking at a variety of filter feeders and grazers. We also spent time down on the rocky shore, where we sampled the shore to find out what lived there, and where on the shore each species was found. It was a busy day, but the sun was shining and everyone learnt something new. Thanks to Miss Cross for coming with us.
