Sports Corner

Tessa Nicol —

We are nearing the end of summer sports, with many of our students preparing for winter sports.

We have had some excellent results across our summer teams and displays of sportsmanship. Thank you to those students and parents who have been turning up for duty, volunteered to umpire or referee, coaching our students and supporting on the sideline each week. We appreciate your positive support for both our Queen’s teams and the opposition. Please keep an eye out for uniform returns over the coming weeks in the notices and ensure your child returns their uniform washed and tidy for the next student to use.

If your child has registered as a competitive player for the upcoming winter season, they are required to attend all trials for their registered sports. If they are unavailable for trials, please speak with the Teacher in Charge as soon as possible. If your child does not turn up to trials and they have not communicated this with the Teacher in Charge, they run the risk of missing out on a spot in their desired team due to the large volume of students registered to play sports this year.

If students have registered as social players for winter sports, they are not required to attend trials. More information as to how teams will be created will be made available over the coming weeks.

If your child has done exceptionally well in their sports recently, please contact Tessa at sport@queens.school.nz. We are always looking to celebrate our students, whether they are competing, umpiring, refereeing or coaching, we want to hear from you!

Parent Coaches

Thank you to the parents who have put their hands up to assist with teams over the winter period. If Tessa has not already, she will be getting in touch with you next week to confirm your availability.

We are still actively looking for a Senior A and Senior B basketball coach, as well as a hockey coach for the winter season.

The rowing crew are looking for an assistant coach for next season.

If you are interested in helping with these teams, or know someone who has the skills and may be interested, please contact Tessa at sport@queens.school.nz.

Student Coach, Umpire and Referee Workshop

The Otago Secondary School Sport Association is running a student sport workshop on Wednesday the 3rd of April at the Edgar Centre. The workshop is aimed at developing upcoming coaches, umpires and referees who are interested in learning more about the facilitation of sports. Netball South, Otago Volleyball and Southern Football are just a few of the facilitators of the workshop and is a great opportunity for students to upskill themselves ahead of the winter season.

Students who are interested in attending this workshop must be willing to coach, umpire or referee for the upcoming winter season, or term four summer sports, either with Queen’s or in the wider school community. If your child has registered their interest, a permission slip will be sent home next week with more details, including a permission slip which must be signed and returned before your child can attend. Students have been sent a draft copy of the schedule for the day, please check with your child if you wish to see the agenda.

Netball Parent Meeting

Queen’s will be hosting a parent evening on Thursday the 4 April to give parents the opportunity to meet the coaches for the 2024 season. Senior A head coach and Netball South Coach Educator Lana Morrison, will be hosting the evening, with support from Netball South and the Queen’s Director of Sport, Tessa Nicol. The parent evening will give parents, caregivers and students the opportunity to hear first-hand information about the upcoming season, expectations and a chance to ask questions at the end. We warmly invite all parents of both competitive and social players to attend this meeting to gain further understanding of the netball season ahead. There is an expectation that all junior and senior competitive players attend this meeting.

The parent evening will be directly after the senior netball trials in the school hall. We are hoping to adopt similar evenings with other sports in the future.
