Guest Speakers in Humanities

Micaela Sumner (10CRO) —

On Tuesday our Humanities class were lucky enough to hear from three guest speakers from the Red Cross Dunedin who help refugees coming from Afghanistan.

We have been learning about the issues in Afghanistan with relation to the Taliban, so it was very interesting to get a deeper understanding of how our own country aids Afghan Refugees when they first come to New Zealand. Our speakers were Mandy and Kelly, two social workers for the Red Cross who have helped refugee families for many years and Sameera, an Afghan Refugee who now helps the Red Cross with communication and cultural barriers.

We learnt a lot about the situation currently happening in Afghanistan and the refugee program the Red Cross has all around New Zealand, as well as how COVID has affected it. Sameera first moved to New Zealand when she was 15, the same age as many of the students in our class so it was interesting to try and put ourselves into her shoes, wondering how we would have reacted if we were put into the same situation as her?
